It was strange being back in the house where I had first set about looking for answers, only to discover so many more questions. I could see that Deedee was lost in thought as well. This was where she had first started down the path that would lead her to become a member of the Abbey.

We sat around the wooden table, while Merick set about making tea on the wood-fired stove that dominated the kitchen. The space looked exactly as it had when we had first come here looking for Glenda’s mother to let her know what had happened to her daughter.

“I never knew Glenda had a sister,” Joe said. He had been staring at Kyla intensely since we arrived.

“Not surprising. Fae are very private; even with one another,” she replied. “And by the way, you’re welcome for saving your butt back there.”

Joe narrowed his eyes, the set of his jaw telling me he was about to say something he might later regret.

“We really appreciate what you did back there,” I said, quickly interjecting myself. “Everything happened so fast.”

Merick sat down a wooden tray with steaming mugs of tea for us all to take. I had to admit, the taste of chamomile and lavender was incredibly soothing.

“Are you okay?” I asked Deedee. “From earlier…and being back here?”

She nodded stiffly, taking a careful sip. “I am. I think I’ll have a headache for days. When that thing smashed my barrier, it was like something inside my head splintered as well.” She rubbed at her shoulders, twisting her head from side to side as she attempted to work the kinks out. “But I’ll be okay; just never felt anything quite like that before.”

“You’ll feel better quicker than you think,” Kyla said. “You are still learning. Your magical constructs are physical manifestations of your thoughts. So, when the golem struck it, it was like he struck a part of you as well. In time, you’ll learn to adjust that, to draw on forces that are outside of yourself to make your creations.”

“So, are you a member of the Abbey as well?” I asked. “You seem to know an awful lot about them.”

She arched her eyebrows and smiled. “No. I have no use for that order. They tried recruiting me long ago, when they snared my sister,” she said, her eyes distant with memory. “I told her then she would regret becoming involved with them.”

It was brief, the flash of hurt that I saw in her eyes, and she quickly batted it aside, replacing it with anger.

“Of course, she would have to be alive now to regret it.” Her eyes briefly cut to Joe, and for once, he looked away, but not before I saw guilt flit across his stone features.

“I’m sorry about that,” I said. “I only met her once, but…she made an impression.”

Now that Kyla was closer, I studied the necklace she wore. It was small, a diamond teardrop hanging from a thin silver chain. The familiarity of it bugged me until it hit me where I had seen it.
